A fascinating exploration of the history, development, and future of virtual reality, a technology with world-changing potential, written by award-winning journalist and author David Ewalt, stemming from his 2015 Forbes cover story about the Oculus Rift and its creator Palmer Luckey. You’ve heard about virtual reality, seen the new gadgets, and heard about how VR will be the next big thing. But you probably haven’t yet realized the extent to which this technology will change the way we live. We used to be bound to a physical reality, but new immersive computer simulations allow us to escape our homes and bodies. Suddenly anyone can see what it’s like to stand on the peak of Mount Everest. A person who can’t walk can experience a marathon from the perspective of an Olympic champion. And why stop there? Become a dragon and fly through the universe. But it’s not only about spectacle. Virtual and augmented reality will impact nearly every aspect of our lives - commerce, medicine, politics - the applications are infinite. It may sound like science fiction, but this vision of the future drives billions of dollars in business and is a top priority for such companies as Facebook, Google, and Sony. Yet little is known about the history of these technologies. In Defying Reality, David M. Ewalt traces the story from ancient amphitheaters to Cold War military laboratories, through decades of hype and failure, to a 19-year-old video game aficionado who made the impossible possible. Ewalt looks at how businesses are already using this tech to revolutionize the world around us, and what we can expect in the future. Writing for a mainstream audience as well as for technology enthusiasts, Ewalt offers a unique perspective on VR. With firsthand accounts and on-the-ground reporting, Defying Reality shows how virtual reality will change our work, our play, and the way we relate to one another. 1. Language: English. Nominated for the National Book Award: The story of a middle-aged American man searching for himself in the ruins of Mexico. At the start of this vibrant and invigorating novel, Robert Brill has a farm, a law practice, a daughter in high school, a son fighting in Vietnam, and a wife who deep-dives into the sherry bottle every night. What more can a typical Midwesterner ask for in the late 1960s? A lot, thinks Brill. Tired of distracting himself with drinking, hunting, and sleeping around, Brill leaves Illinois and his family to join an archaeological dig in Puebla, Mexico. As he sifts through pre-Columbian artifacts, Brill considers the ruins of his life and imagines what might have been. One exhilarating fantasy involves a beautiful and free-spirited woman named Gabby. If there is a lesson to be learned from cataloging ancient pottery shards, however, it is that the past never disappears, no matter how far you try to run from it. Hilarious, candid, and deeply felt, Brill Among the Ruins is considered by many critics to be Vance Bourjaily´s finest novel. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Fleet Cooper. Katherine Mansfield accomplishes an incredible drama with detailed characterization in ´´Miss Brill´´, a story only four pages long, written in the early 1920´s. The main character is a lonely spinster, probably an elderly Englishwoman, living in a resort area of France near the seashore, earning enough to support herself by tutoring English children and reading the newspapers to an old invalid whose ability to hear and comprehend are questionable. She sits on a bench at the park and creates fantasy scenarios involving the people around her, enhanced by her eavesdropping skills. The simple plot is enriched with symbolism, word selection, and limited omniscient point of view, and emerges as a masterwork. Ann M. Richardson is an Audible-approved narrator, who has worked with many publishers including Oasis Audio, Harper Audio, PostHypnotic Press, and Audible. Her clear narration style and empathetic delivery put the listener right inside the story with the characters. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Ann Richardson.
